A method statement is a method of control that is used after a risk assessment of an operation has been carried out. The method statement is used to control the operation and to ensure that all concerned are aware of the hazards associated with the work and the safety precautions to be taken.

In addition, construction method statements are used on site. For a particular section of similar work, they detail its boundaries, materials and plant requirements and temporary works designs.

For example in the construction of a wall by pouring cement, it may include stop end and top of pour positions, type and volume of concrete, pumps and vibrators required, and the shutter designs.

Method statements, are usually written by the engineers doing the work, and they principally involve collating information from all the drawings and specifications to produce a series of large-scale sketches, giving general dimensions, positions of service and stressing ducts and reinforcement.

They also contain information concerning the order and method of construction with reference to work procedures. On some sites they are in fact a contractual requirement, requiring submission to the resident engineer.

Checklists, included with the work procedures, may be used to control construction.

They list all the quality requirements for a piece of work, reminding the site engineer of what is required, and ensuring that he/she checks his/her work before signing it off.
